Despite the current dominance of SUVs, minivans are still in demand. But that doesn’t mean minivans can’t take some design cues from SUVs in order to continue competing into the new decade. The 2021 Kia Sedona is different from the other common minivan models because it rejects lots of old minivan front cabin designs in favor of more popular SUV-inspired elements.

Drivers will notice the difference right away, but those in the other seats will recognize long-trusted minivan traits like power sliding doors, folding bench seats, and rear entertainment and comfort features. In short, the Sedona didn’t have to stop being a minivan, it just had to adjust a few things to make it unique enough to compete. There are three trims with different sets of features, but the table below highlights the most significant available features and relevant specifications.

Model Analysis

A quick look at the driver’s seat in the Sedona shows a shifter that’s not attached to the steering column or mounted to the dashboard like most minivans, but rather one that naturally sticks up from between the front seats like one would find in most cars and SUVs. The dashboard also takes cues from other Kia SUVs rather than mimicking competing minivans. The engine is plenty of power for a full minivan and doesn’t drive up the price by trying to be something it isn’t. Overall, the Kia Sedona is one of the most forward-thinking minivans by design, instead of cramming odd features into a large frame and calling it a minivan.
